Experiencing the story and landscape of the Little Cities will be approached from the angle of those who have passed before us on the long awaited Little Cities Cemetery Tour on Friday, May 11! The tour will not only feature many of the fascinating graveyards in these hills and the stories they tell, but will have the added attraction of being co-led by Beth Santore, National Board Member for the Association of Gravestone Studies. Beth is an expert in the study of gravestone symbolism and art. Among thcemeteries to be visited are the Haydenville Cemetery where some markers are fashioned from the town’s clay tile products, Fort Street Cemetery in Nelsonville built on the site of native American Indian burial grounds, Rendville Cemetery and Payne Cemetery where powerful stories of African Americans in the region are told. Living history characters and local citizens will greet visitors at some cemeteries to enhance the understanding of the story. This day long tour will begin in downtown Nelsonville and feature a catered luncheon. This is a small group tour with transportation provided by van. Snacks and morning coffee/tea provided.
Tour fees are $68 per individual. Book this tour with the Spring Redbud Tour for a special rate of $125. LCBD members and students receive the special rate of $60 per tour and $110 for both.
